A group of white ladders reaching upward from a grey, house-like base, Charlie Brouwer’s Hallelujah prompts the viewer to reflect on our place in the world and perhaps what lies beyond. Installed at the Howard County Library System’s Central Branch, Hallelujah is crafted of stained black locust wood, a readily available material favored by the artist. Brouwer uses common materials and methods in order to create work that is friendly and approachable, while at the same time leading to meaningful contemplation.
Brouwer taught art at Radford University until 2009, when he retired in order to create and exhibit art full-time. He makes his home in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. ARTsites 2019 is Brouwer’s third ARTsites exhibit. His sculpture Hope was part of ARTsites 2013, while Happy Wanderers was included in ARTsites 2014.
ARTsites 2019 sculptures will be on display through July 2020. Our new ARTsites brochure will soon be available – call 410-313-ARTS (2787) to reserve your copy.
