Jack Worthing is living a double life. In the quaint countryside he’s a pious gent disapproving of his wayward brother Earnest, but when he is in the city, he takes on his “brother” Earnest’s badboy lifestyle to woo his beloved Gwendolyn. When Jack’s libertine friend, Algernon, discovers this secret, he decides to investigate Jack’s country estate as Earnest, where he immediately falls in love with Jack’s young and pretty ward, Cecily. When Gwendolyn makes a surprise visit to the country, the importance of being Earnest becomes clear as two women both believe themselves to be in love with “Earnest.” Hilarity ensues as the confusion about identity rises. Oscar Wilde’s razor-sharp wit reveals the ridiculous trivialities of class status and identity.
Suggested for people 13 or older.
