Howard County Poet Laureate 2024 – 2026

Truth Thomas

Truth Thomas was appointed as Howard County’s first Poet Laureate. Thomas, whose poems have appeared in over 150 publications, including “The 100 Best African American Poems” (edited by Nikki Giovanni), will serve from April 2024 through March 2026. In this new role, Thomas will advocate for and contribute to Howard County’s poetic and literary legacy through public readings and participation in civic events.

Howard County Youth Poet Laureate 2025 – 2026

Penelope Tofigh

Penelope Tofigh, a junior at River Hill High School, is an accomplished writer and active participant in the school’s theatre program, wind ensemble, jazz band, and marching band. She earned first place in the 2025 Poetry Out Loud competition at River Hill, went on to win the Maryland State title, and became a National Semi-Finalist. As Howard County’s next Youth Poet Laureate—a one-year honorary role appointed by the County Executive—Tofigh plans to host regular poetry slams and performance workshops for local youth.
