At first glance, Bobby Donovan’s Tidal Reach, installed near the main entrance to Howard Community College in Columbia, appears to be a purely abstract work of art. Closer inspection, however, reveals that the sculpture’s steel rods and wooden blocks ‘float’ together much like a ship’s mast. “For many years now,” says Donovan, “I have been intrigued with nautical forms – both man-made and natural. Tidal Reach represents the latest in this investigation.”
A printmaker as well as a sculptor, Donovan received his bachelor’s degree in fine art from the Swain School of Design in New Bedford, Massachusetts and did his graduate studies in painting at American University. He makes his home in Union Bridge, Maryland.
