Head StART in ART Courtyard Mosaic Mural Unveiling
June 27, 6pm | Howard County Center for the Arts
We’re thrilled to announce the addition of a stunning new mosaic mural to the Center for the Arts courtyard! We hope you’ll join us and County Executive Calvin Ball (invited) for a special reception to celebrate the unveiling of this project completed through our Head StART in ART Artist-in-Residence program.
The mural celebrates our long-standing partnership with the Ellicott City Head Start Center. For nearly twenty years, our Head StART in ART program has provided hands-on arts experiences to Head Start students such as this mural residency, which has brought color, light, and beauty to the building that is home to both organizations.
Over the course of two school years, artist Susan Stockman worked with small groups of Head Start students to assemble the mosaic. More than 200 students participated, placing tiles and gluing them into place as they learned related lessons about shapes, the use of simple tools, and the need to ‘reduce, reuse, and recycle.’
The mosaic residency was funded through grants from the Isadore and Bertha Gudelsky Family Foundation, Maryland State Arts Council 50th Anniversary Public Art Across Maryland, and Wells Fargo. Head Start is a federally funded program that has helped low-income families across the country since 1965.
The evening will also include an opening night reception for the Columbia Film Festival, presented by Columbia Festival of the Arts, and the screening of two comedic, Maryland-based feature films, Nothing from Something and I Like Me. Visit columbiafilmfestival.org for ticket information.
