The entrance to the Howard County Public School System administrative offices is brightened by the colorful presence of Mary Anger’s Butterfly, a sculpture through which the artist explores fractal geometry and its presence in all forms of life. The vivid geometric patterns on Butterfly’s ‘wings’ also serve as a reminder of the graceful creature’s humble origins as a caterpillar. Mary is often inspired by ecology and the rhythms and cycles of life, and designs with an eye towards beauty.
Born in Manhattan, Mary now lives in New Jersey, working in two- and three-dimensional media as well as video, television, light, and computer-generated work. Her public artwork has been exhibited around the country as well as in Canada and abroad. Mary’s sculptures were also featured in ARTsites 2014 and ARTsites 2017.
ARTsites 2019 sculptures will be on display through July 2020. Stop by the Center for the Arts to pick up a copy of our ARTsites 2019 brochure or call 410-313-ARTS (2787) to request one.
