Aptly placed at the James and Anne Robinson Nature Center, Elliott Hamilton’s Insect House is a sculpture whose title reveals its true purpose: providing habitat for beneficial insects and native solitary bees. Beginning with a honeycomb-like structure of wooden hexagonal forms, Hamilton has created myriad nooks and crannies for insect nesting by filling each cavity with organic and inorganic matter in a variety of shapes and sizes. The resulting work is functional and visually striking.
Hamilton, who lives in Hyattsville, has exhibited his environmental sculptures and paintings throughout the region. Insect House is his first contribution to an ARTsites exhibit.
