HCAC’s Visual & Performing Arts Camps
June 28 – August 27
Our summer camp program is just getting under way, so there’s still time to plan your child’s summer arts adventure. Registration remains open for many of our Visual and Performing Arts Camps. Don’t wait any longer – register today!
This month we’re featuring The Bard himself, William Shakespeare, and our always popular theatre camps led by instructors from Chesapeake Shakespeare Company:
Meeting Mr. Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Session 3: July 12-16, Grades 2-4
It’s never too early to be introduced to the classics! And who better to start with than the ultimate storyteller, Mr. William Shakespeare? Campers will get a chance to move around during this action-packed week. In addition to theatre games and acting exercises, each week we will explore more in-depth scene study focusing on a different one of Shakespeare’s Introductory plays. Once a week we will explore (physically distanced) basic unarmed stage combat and on Fridays we will film a virtual performance for family & friends. This week we will focus on the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Shakespeare’s Soliloquies, Sonnets, & Swords: The Tempest
Session 4: July 19-23, Grades 4-7
Our oldest campers will explore some of Shakespeare’s more advanced plays and sonnets. They’ll hone their acting muscles through theatre games, acting exercises, and scene studies of a different play each week. Once a week we will explore (physically distanced) basic sword or staff combat and on Fridays we will film a virtual performance for family & friends. This week we will focus on the play The Tempest.
Storytime Shakespeare: Comedies
Session 8: August 16-29, Grades K-2
Our youngest campers will spend their mornings warming up with theatre games and acting exercises before diving into crafts in the afternoon. Each day will focus on telling the story in a community circle of a different Shakespeare play. This week we will all share a laugh while we focus on Shakespeare’s comedic side exploring A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It, and The Comedy of Errors. Friday we will film a virtual performance to share with family & friends.
Camps will be offered in one-week, full-day sessions for students entering Grades K-7. Individual camps will be structured as learning pods consisting of one instructor, one counselor, and up to 8 campers. The use of face masks, physical distancing, and health screenings are among the other safety precautions that will also be in place.
