Charlie Brouwer’s latest ARTsites sculpture is perfectly at ‘home’ in its new surroundings at the James & Anne Robinson Nature Center. Crafted of black locust, Long Walk Home is one of a series of figurative sculptures made by Brouwer that feature house-shaped bodies – he sometimes calls them ‘home bodies.’ For Brouwer, these sculptures reflect the idea that journeys, whether actual or metaphorical, often begin and end at home.
A frequent ARTsites participant, Brouwer has been creating outdoor sculptures for more than 30 years. He favors black locust – traditionally used for fence posts – as a building material for its durability and weather resistance. Brouwer grew up in Michigan but now makes his home in Virginia, where he taught art at Radford University from 1987-2008, before retiring to create art full-time.
ARTsites 2021 sculptures will be on display through July 2022. To request a copy of our ARTsites 2021 brochure, email info@hocoarts.org, or click here to view photos of the sculptures online.
