An enthusiastic crowd – including Howard County Executive Calvin Ball, County Council member Liz Walsh, members of the EC250 Board, and HCAC staff, among others – was on hand recently as HCAC Resident Studio Artist Lisa Scarbath’s Pieces of History: EC250 Mosaic Project was unveiled in its new temporary home in the window of 8095 Main Street in Ellicott City. The artwork, first displayed at the Center for the Arts as part of our annual Resident Visual Artists Exhibit this spring, consists of six individual panels, each depicting a different aspect of Ellicott City’s 250-year history.
Going into this ambitious project, Lisa’s goal was to depict the history, personality, and culture of Ellicott City. With that in mind, she crowd-sourced materials for her mosaic, encouraging members of the community to participate by contributing small items that connected them to the town in some way. More than 80 people responded with contributions and accompanying stories. Lisa cataloged those stories, which are now available to view online via a QR code that accompanies the installation. The installation also includes a display inviting viewers to ‘seek and find’ a few of the contributions within the mosaic.
Be sure to stop and take a look at this incredible piece the next time you’re in Ellicott City. The mosaic will be on display through at least the end of 2022.
