Carl Billingsley’s Celebration of Flight stands like a silent sentry observing the comings and goings at the Columbia Association’s Slayton House building. Like much of Billingsley’s work, Celebration is a reflection on way-finding, discovery, and the evolution of modern civilization.
“For me sculpture is a special means of communication,” says Billingsley. “It is a way for me to express some of my thoughts and ideas about the human condition. I usually create abstract sculptures that don’t represent objects, persons, or creatures. More likely, the sculptures are about human activities and ideas that have preoccupied our species for millennia.”
Since retiring after 22 years as a professor at East Carolina University’s School of Art & Design, Billingsley has concentrated on creating art full-time. This is his fourth ARTsites exhibit.
ARTsites 2017 sculptures will be in place through July 2018. Call 410-313-ARTS (2787) to request a copy of our new ARTsites 2017 brochure or check out all 12 sculptures here.
