Those walking past Columbia’s AIDA Bistro have nothing to fear from the larger-than-life character sitting out front. Created by Baltimore artist David Friedheim from a patchwork of brightly painted small steel plates, Yellow Clown seems to want nothing more than to give passersby a friendly hug.
Friedheim has a simple objective for his artwork, which is often playful and childlike: “I wish to make sculptures that will require little explanation yet inspire contemplation,” he says, “sculptures that will capture my viewer’s interest, sculptures people will enjoy.”
Friedheim has participated in a number of ARTsites exhibits and also works collaboratively with his wife and fellow artist Trisha Kyner under the name Grendel’s Mother.
ARTsites 2017 sculptures will be in place through July 2018. Call 410-313-ARTS (2787) to request a copy of our new ARTsites 2017 brochure or check out all 12 sculptures here.
