Installed at Howard County General Hospital, Glenn Zweygardt’s Celestial Trace is sculpted in Verde Antique, a metamorphic stone from Vermont. Originally a white stone with a green vein, Zweygardt explains that it underwent a metamorphic transformation to become the dark green stone that makes up the body of the sculpture. The stone body, studded with insets of cast glass, suggests constellations and the brilliance and intrigue of the night sky. “Finding one’s place in a relationship with nature is the theme of my sculpture,” Zweygardt says. Working with natural materials like stone helps him make that connection.
Since retiring as a Professor of Sculpture at New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Zweygardt has devoted himself full-time to his art. His home and studio are located in Alfred Station, New York.
