We were saddened by the recent passing of two beloved members of Howard County’s arts community. Leora ‘Lee’ Smith was a resident artist at the Center for the Arts for 24 years and was a 50-year member of the Weavers Guild of Greater Baltimore. Lee’s boundless creative energies led her to explore a variety of artistic styles and media, from collage to pastels to temari, an ancient folk art form she picked up during her travels in Japan.
The community is also mourning the loss of local dance legend Eva Anderson, founder of the Baltimore Dance Theatre and the Eva Anderson Dancers, known for its innovative representations of African-American culture through modern dance. Eva spent more than three decades sharing her extraordinary dance and choreography talents as an instructor in Baltimore and Columbia. A memorial service will be held for Eva on November 18th at 11am at St. John United Church, Wilde Lake Interfaith Center. In addition, a free concert, called “A Tribute to Eva Anderson,” is planned for November 26 at 4pm at Morgan State University’s Hurt Gymnasium. Eva’s obituary can be viewed here.
